Medical Astrology

In the ancient time there was a deep link between astrology and ayurveda. Astrology is a great science. Medical science cured our diseases of our body or body parts. Similarly diseases can be predict and cured through astrology. Sometimes it is seen that after taking medicine according to medical science, the disease can not be cured. But after taking remedies according  to astrology, the disease is cured with the same medicine. Sometimes the physician treats wrong due to planetary position. So if a physician has deep knowledge  in astrology, then the diseases will be predicted more surely and the patient will be informed in advance.

Greek physician Hippocrates ——- who is called the father of Allopathy, said that , “A physician without the knowledge of astrology has no right to call himself a physician.”

Dr. Kallman of Psychiatric Institute, New York(USA) said, “Every being has a clock set at the moment of his birth, which predetermines particularly illness and accidents.”

Dr. B.V. Raman said, “An experienced astrologer could indicate the predisposition of a person towards heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer etc. with considerable accuracy.”


How to detect diseases:

6th, 8th and 12th house are evil house. When a planet placed in any of these houses, or the lords of these houses is placed in the other houses or conjoined with other planets and   make relation with natural malefic or disease inflicting planet, then in the dasha or antardasha of the damaged planet the disease will be take place in the parts indicating by the planet, the house and the sign(rashi). 6th house is the house of disease and 6th lord is responsible for disease. 8th house and 8th lord indicate chronic disease, incurable disease and death. 12th lord and 12th house indicate suffering and hospitalization. The dasha and antardasha of the lords of these houses and the planets who make relation with these houses or the house lords should be judged very carefully. Besides this the dasha of the maraka planet should judged very carefully. We judge longevity from 8th house. 8th from the 8th is 3rd. the 3rd house is the alternative house of longevity. We know that we judge the expenditure of any house from it’s 12th house. So 12th of 8th —– 7th and 12th house of 3rd —–2nd  are called maraka  and the lords of these houses are called lord of maraka. In classical astrology 22nd drekkan of ascendant is called the reason of death. We should judge from ascendant, from Moon, from Sun and from Mesh rashi to predict any disease. When from two or more lagna the disease has been predicted, then the disease will surely take place.  One another thing to judge, expect Sun and Moon every planet is owned two signs. Planets give the most result of it’s mool-trikona. Such as for Karkat lagna, Jupiter is the 6th lord and the 9th lord. As dhanu rashi is Jupiters mool-trikona and it is the 6th house for karkata lagna, Jupiter gives the most result of it’s 6th lordship.

I am not giving here which planet represent what kind of disease. Hopefully it is known to all learned astrologers. Here I am giving my experiences.


Cancer is a disease which is nearly incurable. It is said that —-‘Cancer has no answer’. Cancer is a malignant tumor, which can be grown in any part of body and spreads rapidly into the hole body. Rahu is responsible for all malignant growth. When malefic and strong Rahu makes relations with 6th, 8th, or 12th house or with 6th, 8th or 12th lord and aspects any house or placed in any house or placed in maraka house or aspects the maraka house or conjoined with maraka planet, then malignant growth can be effected to the parts of body which are indicated by above mentioned houses or signs. Besides this, when a house is afflicted by the lords of evil houses and the malefic planets, specially by Mars, Saturn and Rahu, then there is maximum chance of cancer in that parts of body indicated by that house. Strength of lagna and lord of lagna should also be judged.


Sometimes it is seen that part of body indicating house is not afflicted, but lagna, lord of lagna and indicator of that body parts is heavily afflicted. And from Sun lagna, Moon lagna and natural lagna(Mesh rashi), the house — indicator of the body part is heavily afflicted. Then cancer will be there in that part of body.


When 6th lord is placed in the lagna, 8th or 12th house and Mars, Saturn, Rahu make relation with that house or house lord and afflict any house, then cancer will effect in that parts of body which is indicated by the afflicted house or planet.


We should also judge the position of Ketu is responsible for all types of hidden disease. As a karaka of cancer Ketu should also be judged.


So we should judge Rahu, Ketu, Saturn and Mars as the karaka planet of cancer. If these planets make relation with the lord of evil houses(6th, 8th, 12th) then there is a chance of cancer.


If a sign or house is afflicted by Rahu, Ketu, Saturn and Mars together and if these four planets conjoined with maraka or some of them are maraka or afflicted by evil lord, then cancer will be there in part of body indicates by the afflicted house.



Leukemia is a disease due to increasing of white cell in blood. Malignant growth is created in white cell of blood and destroys the red cell of blood. New red cells are not created, so due to lack of pure blood pure blood is needed to be transplant. After some days the red cells of that new blood also destroyed. This disease is commonly known as ‘blood cancer’. Moon and Mars are the karaka of blood. From the signs Karkata, Vrischuka and Meena are the karaka of blood. And from the houses 4th, 8th and 12th house indicate blood.


Laws of the disease: If lagna and lord of lagna make relation with 6th house, 6th lord, Rahu, Ketu, Saturn and Mars and the watery signs —- Karkata, Vrischika and Meena are heavily afflicted, and with these 4th, 8th and 12th house also are being afflicted specially by Rahu, Ketu, Saturn and Mars then there is maximum possibility of blood cancer (This combinations should judged from every side, i.e. from lagna, moon, sun and mesh rashi). Beside these it is necessary to judge if the natural 6th lord Mercury is afflicted or not, the karaka of blood — Moon and Mars are afflicted or not by the malefic. Mars is the main karaka of blood. Mars is karaka for red cell and Moon is karaka for white cell. So if Moon and Mars are found to be weak by any reason, afflicted by malefic, debilitated, and afflicted by Rahu or Ketu and placed in the 6th, 8th, 12th or makes relation with 6th, 8th or 12th lord then there is maximum chance of blood cancer.

Rahu is responsible for any type of malignant growth and Ketu is responsible for hidden disease —– the disease which can not be detected easily. When Rahu and Ketu without any benefic aspect afflicts 4th, 8th, 12th house or the lords of the houses and the watery signs and Moon, Mars and make relation with 8th lord then there is maximum possible of blood cancer.


Example 1.  Date of birth – 30.11.1995,  Time of birth – 07:54 a.m. IST ,

Place of birth –  Howrah, West Bengal, India.

Explanations of example 1 :  Ascendant(Lagna) Dhanus. Mars and Venus in lagna. Saturn and Moon in 3rd. Ketu in 5th. Rahu in 11th. Sun , Mercury and Jupiter in 12th.

Case history: Blood cancer of the native was detected in August 2001. Then mahadasha of Jupiter and antardasha of Venus was running. The native is under treatment and now he is quite well.


Analysis : 1. Lagna is in the star of Ketu. Lord of lagna is in 12th house —– in the blood indicated house and in the star of the Maraka and badhaka —- Mercury, and aspected by Rahu and Saturn. The 12th lord Mars —- the indicator of blood is in lagna and conjoined with the 6th lord Venus. Mars and Venus both are in the star of Ketu. So the lagna and the lord of lagna both are afflicted by malefic.


  1. Mars , who is in the star of Ketu and joined with 6th lord Venus is aspecting the watery sign Karkat rashi. The lord of that sign — Moon is placed in 3rd(8th from the 8th) conjoined with the 3rd lord Saturn and aspected by Rahu. Vrischika rashi is aspected by Rahu(which is in the star of Mars) and Saturn(the maraka). The lord of the sign — Mars is conjoined with 6th lord Venus and in the star of Ketu. The  Meena rashi  is aspected by Mars and Jupiter(who is aspected by Saturn and Rahu). The lord of Meena rashi — Jupiter is in the 12th and aspected by Saturn and Rahu. So all the watery signs and their lords are afflicted.


  1. Natural 6th lord Mercury is the Maraka and Badhak itself. That mercury is in the 12th house and in his enemy’s house and aspected by Rahu and Saturn. So the Mercury is also afflicted.


  1. The 8th lord Moon is in 3rd house(8th from the 8th) and aspected by Rahu. That Moon is also the lord of 22nd Drekkan. So the 8th lord is afflicted.


  1. Indicator of longevity and normal health — Sun is in the 12th house, in the star of Saturn and aspected by Saturn and Rahu. Sun is also conjoined with Maraka and Badhaka — Mercury. So the Sun is also afflicted.


  1. The blood indicating houses — 4th , 8th and 12th house have fallen in the watery signs. So all these houses and the lords of these houses are afflicted, as I have described in point no. 2.


  1. The  6th house is aspected by Maraka and Badhaka Mercury and afflicted Jupiter and Sun. The 6th lord Venus is placed in lagna, in the star of Ketu and conjoined with blood representing planet — Mars. So the 6th lord and 6th house both are afflicted.


  1. In respect of Moon Lagna: The 6th lord Moon is in lagna conjoined with lord of lagna and in the star of 2nd and 11th lord Jupiter. Lagna and the lord of lagna are aspected by Rahu. So lagna and lord of lagna both are afflicted.

The  4th house is  Jupiter(2nd and 11th lord)and 8th lord Mercury. The lord of 4th house — Venus is in 11th house(6th from the 6th), in the star of Ketu, conjoined with Mars.There is no direct aspect of any planet in the 8th house, but there is rashi aspect of Venus. The 8th lord Mercury is aspected by Saturn and Rahu,and conjoined with 2nd and 11th lord Jupiter.In 12th , there is also the rashi aspect of Mercury(8th lord), Jupiter(2nd and 11th lord) and Sun(7th lord). The 12th lord is placed in lagna, conjoined with the 6th lord and aspected by Rahu.  So all the blood indicating houses and their lords are afflicted.

6th house is aspected by 3rd lord Mars and Jupiter. 6th lord being the karaka of blood is aspected by Rahu . So 6th house and 6th lord both are afflicted.

  1. The karaka for blood Moon and Mars both are afflicted.
  2. From Sun lagna: Lagna is aspected by Rahu and Saturn and conjoined by 2nd lord Jupiter and 8th lord Mercury. Maraka Jupiter is in the star of 8th lord. The lord of lagna Mars is in the 2nd house i.e. in the maraca sthana and in the star of Ketu. That Mars is also conjoined with 7th (maraca) and 12th( karaka for blood) lord Venus, and Venus is in the star of Ketu. So lagna and lord of lagna both are afflicted.

In the 6th , Ketu is placed in his own star and aspected by Saturn and Rahu. 6th lord Mars is afflicted. So, 6th house and lord of 6th house both are afflicted by Rahu, Ketu and Saturn.

In 4th house and on the lord of 4th house there is aspect of Rahu. Moon – karaka for blood is placed in the 4th and aspected by Rahu and Saturn. The 8th house is aspected by Rahu , 6th lord Mars and maraka Venus. Mars and Venus both are in the star of Ketu. 8th lord Mercury is hemmed between malefics and aspected by Rahu and Saturn. Rahu is placed in the 12th house in the star of Mars. The 12th lord Venus is in the 2nd house— maraca sthana, in the star of Ketu, conjoined with 6th lord Mars. So the blood indicating houses——4th, 8th and 12th  house and their lords are afflicted.


11.In respect of natural lagna(Mesh rashi): Ketu is placed in ascendant in it’s own star. Rahu and Saturn are aspecting the ascendant. The lord of ascendant is in the star of Ketu, conjoined with Venus(2nd and 7th lord, and in the star of Ketu) and afflicted by Ketu. The dispositor of the lord of ascendant Jupiter is placed in the 8th and aspected by Rahu and Saturn. So the ascendant and the lord of ascendant both are afflicted.

The 4th house(Karkata) and the lord of 4th house are afflicted. 8th house(Vrischika) and the lord of 8th house are afflicted. 12th house(Meena) and the lord of 12th house are also afflicted. These are explained before. So the blood indicating houses and their lords get afflicted.

The 6th lord mercury is placed in the 8th and aspected by Rahu and Saturn. There is no direct aspect in the 6th house; but there are rashi aspects of Mars and Venus.

Conclusion: The native got attack of the disease in the mahadasha of Jupiter and in the antardasha of Venus. Jupiter gets afflicted and responsible for physical unhappiness. Venus is the lord of disease house; being afflicted by Ketu and Mars Venus becomes the karaka of the disease. Venus is conjoined with 12th lord and Sun is in the 12th. The lord of mahadasha is also in the 12th. So due to this 12th connection, in the antardasha of Venus and Sun the native was hospitalized many times.

Example 2 :- Date of birth – 19.06.1979, Time of birth – 10:30 am (IST), Place of birth – Jabalpur(M.P.)

Saturn and Rahu in ascendant(Sinha), Ketu in the 7th, Moon in the 8th, Mars and Venus in the 10th, Sun and Mercury in the 11th, Jupiter in the 12th.

Blood cancer of the native was detected in July 1990. As the indication of the disease the native was suffering from fever and pain in body and hands. The native was admitted several times in Tata Memorial Hospital of Mumbai and her blood was transplanted. The native died on 2nd November 1991.

In this chart we also get the afflictions of malefic planets as I explained in example 1. Due to saving space I am not giving the explanation. I think the learned readers can find the reasons of the disease.

Conclusion: Venus is in the constellation of Rahu and aspected by 6th lord Saturn—conjoined with Rahu; Venus is conjoined with badhaka and indicator of blood — Mars. The disease developed and detected in the mahadasha of Venus and the native also died in the mahadasha of Venus. Mars is aspected by Saturn and in the constellation of Sun. Sun is in the 11th (6th from the 6th) afflicted by Ketu and in the constellation of Mars. So the disease was developed in the antardasha of Sun. The disease was also detected in the mahadasha of Venus and in the antardasha of Sun. 8th lord Jupiter makes house exchange with 12th lord Moon. So due to the placement of 8th lord in the 12th, the longevity is decreased. For the placement of 12th lord in the 8th, hospitalization has taken place several times; and in the antardasha of 12th lord Moon the native died in hospital. Moon is the lord of 22nd drekkana of ascendant.

Cancer in Pancreas

Pancreas is a gland of digestive system. It creates insulin. It helps to digest carbohydrate, protein and fat added aliments. Insulin which is created by pancreas controls the sugar of blood. Pancreas is situated in the upper abdomen. Astrologicaly it is judged from 5th house. The karaka planet of pancreas is Jupiter and karaka rashi is Sinha.

Detecting an Ailment:- If Sinha rashi, Sun, 5th house, 5th lord, and Jupiter makes relation with 6th,8th,12th lords or afflicted by Rahu, Ketu, Mars and Saturn or afflicted by maraka planet then there is much possibility of cancer in pancreas. The role of Rahu and Ketu is much in this respect. Because Rahu is responsible for malignant growth and Ketu is of hidden disease i.e. those diseases which are not detected easily. Ascendant and lord of ascendant should be judged all times.

Example:- Date of birth – 28.03.1942, Time – 12:56 pm, Place – Shantipur, Nadia, West Bengal.

Moon in ascendant(Karkata), Rahu in the 2nd, Venus in the 7th, Mercury and Ketu in the 8th, Sun in the 9th, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn in the 11th. Lord of 22nd drekkana of ascendant is Saturn.

The disease of the native was detected in 1997. Symptoms were pain in abdomen and jaundice. After CT scan it was founded that there was a growth in the tube of pancreas. On 25th December 1997 an operation was held for bypass of the tube. Then it was founded that the growth was malignant. No good result was founded after the operation, but the situation of the native was decreasing day by day. On 23rd February 1998 the native was died.

Explaination:- 1. The degree of ascendant in the star of 7th and 8th lord Saturn. Saturn is also the lord of 22nd drekkana of ascendant. Lord of ascendant Moon is in the star of 3rd and 12th lord Mercury. That Mercury is in the 8th and conjoined with Ketu. Saturn is aspecting the ascendant and the lord of ascendant. Badhaka Venus is also aspecting ascendant. Another thing should be noted that Saturn is in the 11th(6th from 6th), conjoined with 6th lord Jupiter and aspecting the ascendant. So ascendant and the lord of ascendant both are afflicted.

  1. 6th lord Jupiter is in the 11th(6th from 6th), conjoined with 7th-8th lord Saturn(lord of 22nd drekkana) and 5th lord mars. 11th is the badhaka of the ascendant. So Jupiter has turned to disease karaka and maraka. The 6th house is aspected by Rahu and 5th lord Mars. The karaka house of pancreas is 5th house. Here it is seen that the 5th lord has made relation with 6th house, 6th lord and 11th house. So 6th house and 6th lord both are afflicted.
  2. the 5th house is aspected by 6th lord Jupiter, 7th-8th lord Saturn and 5th lord Mars. The 5th lord Mars is in the 11th(6th from 6th) conjoined with Jupiter and Saturn. For cancer ascendant Jupiter is 6th and 9th lord. The 6th for being the mool-trikona of Jupiter, Jupiter gives maximum result of his 6th lordship, specially when conjoined with or aspected by maraka. Here Jupiter is conjoined with maraka Saturn and placed in the badhaka sthana i.e. in 11th. So karaka house of pancreas — 5th and lord of 5th both are afflicted. The karaka planet of pancreas – Jupiter is also afflicted.
  3. Ketu is in the 8th conjoined with 3rd lord(8th from 8th) Mercury and in the star of 6th lord. 8th lord Saturn is in 11th e.i. in badhaka sthana, conjoined with Jupiter. 8th house is aspected by Saturn and Rahu. So 8th house and it’s lord both are afflicted.
  4. In the 3rd (Alternative house of longevity) 6th lord Jupiter and 2nd lord Sun(afflicted by Ketu) are aspecting. The third lord Mercury is conjoined with Ketu, aspected by Saturn and Rahu, in the star of 6th lord and placed in the 8th. So the 3rd house and it’s lord both are afflicted.
  5. In the 11th(6th from 6th) 6th lord Jupiter, 7th-8th lord Saturn and 5th-1oth lord Mars are placed. The 11th lord Venus is in 7th, aspected by 6th lord Jupiter and in the star of Mars. So the 11th house and it’s lord become the disease indicator.
  6. In respect from Moon ascendant: As the ascendant and Moon sign is the same, so all the considerable houses and planets are afflicted.
  7. In respect of Sun ascendant: The Sun, being the 6th lord is placed in the ascendant and in the star of 11th lord Saturn. The lord of ascendant Jupiter is in the 3rd(8th from 8th) conjoined with 11th-12th lord Saturn and maraka Mars; and in the star of 5th lord. Ascendant is afflicted by Ketu. So the ascendant and it’s lord both are afflicted.

Rahu is in the 6th in the star of 3rd-8th lord Venus. Maraka Mars, badhaka Mercury and Ketu are afflicting the 6th house. The 6th lord Sun is afflicted by Ketu and in the star of Saturn. So the 6th house and it’s lord both are afflicted.

The 5th lord Moon is in 5th aspected by Saturn and Venus and in the star of badhaka Mercury. The 5th house is hemmed between malefic. So the indicator of pancreas – 5th house house and 5th lord both are afflicted.

The 8th house is afflicted by Ketu. Rashi aspect of Saturn and Mars are there in the 8th. The 8th lord Venus is in 11th , aspected by karaka for pancreas – Jupiter and 5th lord Moon, and in the star of maraka Mars. So the 8th house and it’s lord both are afflicted.

  1. In respect of natural ascendant of zodiac(Mesh rashi):- The ascendant is aspected by Rahu. The lord of ascendant Mars is in 2nd and conjoined with Saturn. So the ascendant and it’s lord both are afflicted.

Rahu is placed in the 5th( the karaka house for pancreas) and aspected by 1st-8th lord Mars, 3rd-6th lord Mercury and afflicted by Ketu. Rahu is in the star of maraka Venus. The 5th lord Sun is afflicted by Ketu and in the star of badhaka Saturn and placed in the 12th. So the 5th house and it’s lord both are afflicted.

The 6th lord Mercury is in 11th conjoined with Ketu, aspected by Saturn and Rahu; is giving aspect in the 5th. The 5th lord Sun is aspecting the 6th. So being get afflicted the 6th lord makes relation with 5th house. Being get the aspect of Rahu the 6th house is also afflicted. The karaka planet of pancreas – Jupiter is afflicted and aspecting the 6th house. So karaka house for pancreas – 5th has made relation with 6th house.

The 8th house is aspected by 11th(6th from 6th) and badhaka Saturn, and by Mars. The 8th lord is conjoined with maraka Saturn and place in another maraka sthana 2nd. So the 8th house and it’s lord both are afflicted.

Conclusion:- If astrologers predict only the general life without judging disease, the whole prediction can be false; this chart is an example of it. Mars for cancer ascendant is raj-yoga karaka planet. Being the 9th lord, Jupiter is also said to be very helpful for this ascendant. The lordship of 6th house is neglected by maximum numbers of astrologers. This is very much wondering that the native was died in the mahadasha of Mars and in the antardasha of Jupiter. In general on one will predict death in this period. Jupiter and Mars both are afflicted by Saturn and placed in the badhaka sthana. Saturn is the lord of 22nd drekkana of ascendant. Planets give the lordship result of their ‘mool-trikona’ sthana mostly and this chart is the example of it. Saturn, Mars and Jupiter all these planets are proved to be the disease creater in this chart. Physical problem was started in the earlier time of Mars dasha. The disease was formed in the antardasha of Rahu as Rahu is in the 5th from Mesh rashi and responsible for malignant growth. Besides this Jupiter, Mars and Saturn make square aspect with Rahu. In the antardasha of Jupiter the disease was detected and the native was died. As Jupiter and Mars are conjoined with maraka and in badhaka sthana, they have turned into the most maraka. At last I am confessing that it is my mother’s chart.

Breast Cancer

Now-a-days the disease is often founded in the females. Breast is judged from the 4th house. Karkata is the rashi for karaka of breast. From 4th house and Karkata rashi the right breast should be judged; from 10th house and Makara rashi the left breast should be judged. The karaka planet of breast is Moon. 2nd,6th and 10th are the indicators of flesh; in zodiac Vrisha, Kanya and Makara are the indicator of flesh.

Detecting an Ailment:- When the 6th house, 6th lord, Kanya rashi or any disease inflicting house or any disease inflicting planet make relation with 4th,10th and 2nd or with the lords of those houses and make relation with Moon; and they are afflicted severely or in the evil houses, then there is maximum possible of cancer in breast. When Moon being the 6th lord placed in ascendant and 4th or 10th house is highly afflicted, then there is possibility of this disease. When 4th or 10th lord and karaka planet Moon will be in 6th,8th or 12th or heavily afflicted by malefic then there is possibility of this disease. When Rahu or Ketu makes relation with the above houses, signs and karaka planet then also there is possibility of this disease.

Example:- Date of birth – 06.02.1949, Time of birth – 11:25 am(IST), Place of birth – Tribeni, Hoogly, West Bengal.

Ascendant is Vrisha, Saturn in 4th, Ketu in 6th, Jupiter in 8th, Sun, Mercury and Venus in 9th, Mars in 10th, Moon and Rahu in 12th. Lord of 22nd drekkana is Jupiter.

The disease was detected in October 2002. The symptom was pain in right breast . On 21.11.2002 some parts of right breast was cut off by an operation in Kolkata. Then she went to Tata Memorial Hospital of Mumbai. There on 06.12.2002 the hole breast was cut off by an operation and chemotherapy was given. Now the native is totally cured.

Explanation:- 1. Retrograde Saturn is placed in the 4th house aspected by maraka Mars, 8th lord Jupiter and Rahu. The Saturn is badhaka for this ascendant and in the star of Ketu. 8th lord is in the star of 6th lord. 4th lord Sun is in the badhaka sthana, conjoined with 6th lord Venus and in the star of Mars. 6th lord is in the star of 4th lord. So karaka of right breast – 4th house and it’s lord both are afflicted.

  1. The ascendant is aspected by Mars, Saturn and Rahu. The lord of ascendant Venus himself is the 6th lord and is in the badhaka sthana conjoined with 4th lord. Tula is mool-trikona of Venus; so Venus will give maximum result of Tula rashi e.i 6th house. Venus is aspected by badhaka and retrograde Saturn. So the ascendant and it’s lord both are afflicted.

3.In karaka rashi Karkata, 6th lord Venus and maraka Mercury are aspecting. The        Saturn is also afflicting Karkata rashi due to retrograde. So Karkata is afflicted.

  1. Karaka of breast Moon is in 12th, in the star of 6th lord, aspected by Ketu and 8th-11th lord Jupiter and conjoined with Rahu.So Moon is heavily affliceted and giving aspect to the 6th.
  2. In the 6th Ketu is placed aspected by Saturn and Rahu and in the star of maraka Mars. The 6th lord Venus is in the of Mars, conjoined with 2nd lord Mercury and 4th lord Sun, afficted by Saturn(being retrograde). So 6th house and it’s lord both are afflicted. 6th has made relation with 4th.
  3. Indicator of flesh – 2nd house is aspected by 8th-11th(6th from 6th) lord Jupiter and afflicted by Ketu. 2nd lord Mercury is afflicting 2nd as he is retrograde, conjoined with 6th lord. Mercury is aspected by Saturn(as retrograde). 6th house and it’s lord are afflicted. In the 10th , maraka Maraka Mars is placed get aspect of Saturn and afflicted by Ketu. 10th lord Saturn is placed in the 4th —- the karaka for right breast, in the star of Ketu, aspected by Rahu, Mars and 8th-11th lord Jupiter. Conclusion: It is seen that from all the four ascendant(birth ascendant, Moon ascendant, Sun ascendant and Mesh rashi) the karaka houses and karaka planets all are afflicted by Rahu, Ketu, Saturn and Mars under any circumstances. Rahu is in maraka sthana. Being the karaka of tumors Mars is in 1st house aspected by Saturn; so the tumor has become malignant. Moon is also responsible for tumors. That Moon also afflicted by Saturn(as it is retrograde). Another karaka of tumors is Jupiter(as it is the lord of watery sign); Jupiter is also aspected by Saturn. Saturn is aspected by Ketu and Mars. So by giving aspect to all the karaka planet of tumors, Saturn has made the tumor malignant due to relation with Ketu. Moon and Rahu is in 4th-10th position. So in the mahadasha of Rahu and in antardasha of Moon the disease is developed and detected. The lord of 22nd drekkana of ascendant – Jupiter is in the star of Mars. So in the mahadasha of Rahu and antardasha of Mars the native was died. Being the badhaka Mars is in ascendant and aspecting the lord of ascendant. The lord of ascendant is debilitated. For placement in the 12th of Rahu, Mars has become the most maraka.

At last it is seen that in which part of body cancer is developing, the indicator planet of that house makes relation with 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th house and their lords; and with Rahu, Ketu, Saturn and Mars. SamAV is transit specific derivation from the Prashtharakas of the 7 planets. In contrast, SAV is Rashi-based concept indicating the strength of a sign on the basis of total number of SAV points. I have my own doubt that any astrological prediction given basing on a single branch of Astrology without corroborating the same with atleast two/three other systems of Hindu Astrological way of predictions could have the chances of omission and commissions. An honest astrologer’s first approach should be to see if the birth time recorded is correct or not before proceeding to give any astrological predictions. Besides, an astrologer should have indepth knowledge of different branches of astrology including various Dasha Systems especially that of conditional Dashas and corroborate his prediction atleast with one conditional Dasha system in an attempt to make his predictions less vulnerable to error, shortcomings and fallibility.

Learn Astrology – Part 1 : Generally most of the people are interested in astrology and want to learn this ancient science. But the biggest roadblock and most difficult question they face is – where to start learning from?

Quite a few succeed in finding a guru with their persistent endeavor, but these gurus teach astrology in such a complicated way that scares off even the earnest aspirants. Most of the astrologers begin teaching with birth-chart making; and its complicated mathematical calculations diminish learners’ enthusiasm and frighten them away. And rest of the pupils run off after hearing complex and high-sounding terminology of astrology.

If certain basic principles are followed sincerely, it can make astrology learning a pleasant and fulfilling experience. Those who want to master science of astrology must always bear these points in their minds:

  1. Begin studying astrology in step by step fashion.
  2. Until a principle is understood completely, do not move to the next one or the other book.
  3. Do not just read, but assimilate whatever is read.
  4. Do not read astrology books without guidance of an experienced guru. Reading more books can confuse you, as there are many junk astrology books in the market.
  5. In the beginnings, pay your attention toward analyzing birth-charts rather than making them.
  6. Initially start analyzing the birth-charts of your friends and relatives who you know well.
  7. As far as possible, learn Sanskrit synonyms of English words used in astrological terminology.

One can advance rapidly in his endeavor to learn astrology, if one keeps above points in mind and stick to them.

Astrology can be divided in two sections: mathematical astrology and predictive astrology. Mathematical part of astrology mainly contains creation of birth chart. In this part of astrology, different positions of the planets are calculated on the basis of time and place etc. On the other hand, predictive astrology is used for foretelling events of future. In this series, we will discuss mathematical portion later and initially focus on predictive astrology. At the time of child-birth, a map of the positions of planets in the cosmos is created, and this map is known as birth-chart or janma kundali. There are various software available in market these days that can be used to calculate mathematical data required and to create birth-charts.

Entire astrology is based primarily on nine planets, twelve signs, twenty-seven Nakshatras and twelve houses (Bhava). Generally predictions are based on permutations and combinations of these elements. Names of nine planets are as follows:

Sun and Moon are considered to be a star and a satellite respectively according to the modern astronomy. But Indian astrology uses word Graha which is translated to Planet in English and includes Sun and Moon for predictive purpose. Similarly, North Node (Rahu) and South Node (Ketu) are astronomical points, and also called Graha (Planet) for predictive purpose.

Indian astrology is earth-centric. Zodiac is a circular belt and all planets seem to be moving on this belt. If this zodiac is divided into twelve equal parts, each part is known as a zodiac sign. These twelve zodiac signs are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Similarly, when this zodiac is divided into twenty-seven equal parts, each part is called a Nakshatra. We will discuss about Nakshatras at length later in this series.

Mathematically a circle is of 360 degrees. Therefore one zodiac sign, which is one-twelfth of zodiac, comprises 30 degrees. Nonetheless, there is no need to go much into the mathematical portion and it is enough to know now that each zodiac sign is of 30 degrees.

Each sign is governed by a planet. Let us have a look at it:

Part 2: In previous article of this series, we learnt about zodiac signs, planets and their ownership. Those were very important concepts and, if possible, try to memorize those concepts. Now, we are going to know about categorization of planets and signs, which is crucial for learning predictive astrology. If you have not read that article, it is recommended to read Part-1, before proceeding to this part.

Firstly, planets are classified into two groups namely benefic and malefic as follows:

Natural Benefic Planets: Moon, Mercury, Venus and Jupiter are considered benefic by nature

Natural Malefic Planets: Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu are considered malefic by nature

Generally, Moon and Mercury are not always benefic. Full Moon i.e. the Moon near Purnima is considered benefic, while ‘No Moon’ i.e. Moon near Amavasya is believed not to be benefic. Similarly, if Mercury is placed with benefic planet, it is considered benefic and if placed with malefic, it is considered malefic. In other words, nature of Mercury depends upon the nature of planet influencing it.

It should be remembered that all natural malefic planets do not always produce negative results. Similarly, all natural benefic planets do not always give positive results. Good or bad effect depends up on several other factors like ownership, placement and aspects etc. We will discuss these factors later.

Let us start with first factor i.e. sign placement. Generally, any planet gives positive results in exalted sign (uchcha rashi), own sign (swa-rashi), and friendly sign (mitra-rashi) in this order. In other words, exalted planets give best results, planets in own sign give second best results and planets in friendly sign gives third best result, if we want to quantify. On the other hand, if a planet is positioned in debilitated sign (neecha-rashi) or enemy’s sign (shatru-rashi), it is not capable of giving good results

Some points to be noted from above table:

  1. Exalted and debilitated signs of a planet are always seventh from each other, e.g. Sun is exalted in Aries, the first sign of zodiac, and debilitated in Libra, the seventh sign of zodiac.
  2. Sun and Moon are lord of just one sign. While Rahu and Ketu are not lord of any of the signs. Other planets are lord of two signs each.
  3. Rahu and Ketu don’t have their own signs. Even exalted and debilitated signs of Rahu and Ketu are not well-accepted by all the astrologers.

It is also required to understand friendship and enmity of planets for predictive astrology. Planets are neutral, friendly or inimical to other planets as follows:

This is very important table and should be memorized. If you find it difficult to memorize initially, there is no need to get frightened. Eventually with the time and practice, you would learn it automatically.

I am sharing a simple but rough formula to memorize above table. Roughly we can classify planets into two groups that are inimical to each other:

Group 1: Sun, Moon, Mars and Jupiter

Group 2: Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu

As I said earlier, this is just a rough formula and there are some exceptions to it which you can note down from above table.

How to use above table? Those planets, which are placed in the signs of friendly planets or located with friendly planets, produce positive results. Similarly, if a planet is situated in sign of enemy planet or positioned with an enemy planet tends to produce diminished positive results.

Let me take an example. You can see from above table that Saturn and Sun are inimical to each other. So if Sun is posited in sign of Saturn i.e. Capricorn or Aquarius or Sun is situated with Saturn, it will not be able to give its good results. In other words, Sun will be weak in giving its results. On the other side, if Sun is with Moon, Mars or Jupiter who are friendly to Sun or in their signs, it should generally give good results.

That is all for this week. In next article, we will discuss about birth-chart, signification of planet/ house/ sign and their use in astrology.

Part 3: Now we will learn how to interpret diagram of a birth chart. We will also get to know concepts like ascendant and house etc.

A birth-chart (also called Kundli or Horoscope in India) can be called a map of planetary positions at the time of birth. There are several different ways of portraying birth-chart in different parts of India. Mainly horoscope is drawn in three major ways – north Indian style, south Indian style and Bangla (East Indian) style. To keep it simple, we will restrict our discussion to north Indian style only.

A birth chart tells about the position of planets in houses and signs. We have already discussed about the planets and zodiac sings, and we will talk about houses a little bit later. In north Indian diagram of birth chart, ascendant sign is written on very first place and then signs are shown from right to left. It means signs are depicted “anti-clock wise” and the number corresponding to zodiac sign is shown in each box. It can be understood better with following example chart:


Houses (Sanskrit: भाव): To understand what is house, we will have to forget all the numbers and names of planets in above example chart for a while. Above birth chart diagram can be decamped in 12 boxes, out of which eight are triangular and four are rectangular in shape. In these four rectangles, topmost rectangle is considered to be “ascendant” or the “first house”. This It has been depicted in gray background in above example chart. Position of ascendant is always fixed in the birth chart. So when we have to find out ascendant, we look at the position of grayed box above. Anything written in that gray box will be called in “first house.”

When we start counting anti-clock wise from first house, the next position arrived thus is known as second house. The next one from second house is called third house and so on. In Sanskrit, house and ascendant are known as bhaav (भाव) and lagna (लग्न) respectively.

House-lord (Sanskrit: भावेश)

As we know, “house” and “sign” are two different concepts. The numbers written in horoscope denote zodiac signs, e.g. “11” can be seen written in first house, which shows that eleventh sign i.e. Aquarius is in ascendant or first house. Similarly, the 12th sign or Pisces is situated in second house. We have studied in previous lesson that lords of Aquarius and Pisces are Saturn and Jupiter respectively. Therefore, in astrological language we will say that lord of first house is Saturn (because ‘11’ is written in first house). In same manner, lord of second house is Jupiter.

The lord of first house is also known as ascendant-lord. Similarly, lord of second house is called second-lord, lord of third house is called third-lord and so on. So in example chart we can say that Saturn is the first house lord, Jupiter is the second house lord and so on.

Position of planets in houses

If we start counting from gray rectangle to the house where Venus and Rahu are placed in example chart, we will count up to 5. Thus, we can say that Rahu and Venus are posited in fifth house. Similarly, Moon and Mars are in sixth, Saturn, Sun and Mercury are in seventh, and Jupiter and Ketu are in eleventh house. This is known as position of planets in different houses.

Position of Planets in signs

It is comparatively easier to determine position of planets in zodiac signs. The number written in the box where planet is posited shows position of the planet in sign. In above illustration, ‘3’ is written in the box where Venus and Rahu are placed, so we can say that these planets are in 3rd sign i.e. Gemini. In similar fashion, Moon and Mars are in Cancer sign because ‘4’ is written in the box where they are posited.

Before finishing this week’s lesson, I would like to repeat it that position of planets in houses and signs are two different concepts. When it comes to houses, the topmost rectangular house is considered the first one irrespective of the number written there. The numbers written are not important for determining the position of planets in houses. These numbers convey zodiac signs and therefore they are used to ascertain the position of planets in different signs.

Part 4:

In astrology, predictions are based on nature and significations of planets, signs, houses, and their inter-relations.

Astrology treats planets as living being; signs and houses are like those areas, where planets travel. Relationships of planets with each other, with zodiac signs and with houses etc. determine the predictions.

Just like living beings, planets have “nature” in astrology. Other than this, planets also have “significations”. It is of utmost importance to understand the difference between “nature” and “signification”. I have observed several times that even many famous astrologers do not understand this distinction clearly and thus commit mistakes in predictions.

In simple words, “nature” tells about “how” and “signification” answers “what”. Let us understand it more clearly with the help of an example. Suppose that Sun is posited in 10th house in Aries. In such situation, what results will Sun give? A table depicting the significations of houses is given below, which tell us that tenth house signifies business and trade. So “what will Sun give?” is answered with “Sun will give business.” And how is this business or trade going to be? – It is going to be in accordance with the natures of Sun and Aries. Sun is an aggressive planet and Aries is ruled by Mars that is also aggressive. It shows that the business can be of aggressive nature. In other words, native can either be in defense or in sports, where aggression is a necessity. Similarly, a prediction is made by combining the nature and signification of planets, signs and houses.

All the living and non-living things are signified by planets and houses. Because all these things cannot be discussed here, therefore we will discuss only some important significations. Let us first have a look at different houses and their significations:

First house: It signifies birth, head, nature, body, organs, age, looks, height and caste etc.

Second house: It shows money, monetary gain, eyes, face, voice, economical condition, family, food, tongue, teeth, death and nose etc.

Third house: It depicts younger siblings, courage, fear, ears, strength and mental balance etc.

Fourth house: It indicates pleasure, education, vehicles, heart, property, house, mother, relatives, domestic animals and buildings etc.

Fifth house: It suggests progeny, intelligence, laudable actions or work, charity, entertainment and gambling etc.

Sixth house: It points at diseases, bodily deformity, troubles caused by foes, tension, wound, litigation, brothers of mother and depression etc.

Seventh house: It stands for marriage, wife, sex, travel, death, business and partners etc.

Eighth house: Age, misfortune, vice, loan, enmity, sudden death, problems, suffering, pleasure or pain in this life as per karmas of previous lives and afterworlds etc.

Ninth house: It tells about father, luck, guru, praise, effective work, religion, donation and virtues of past births.

Tenth house: It describes occupation, business, trade, fame, class, rank, authority, domination and family business.

Eleventh house: It is used to contemplate benefit, elder brothers, profit, jewelry, fulfillment of longing, monetary gain and success etc.

Twelfth house: It denotes spending, agony, moksha, poverty, actions out of enmity, charity, loss in theft, bondage, left eye, bed pleasure and leg etc.


Part 5: In last lesson, we studies about signification of houses. We also learnt the difference between ‘signification’ and ‘nature’. This week, we are going to learn about planets. The signification and nature of planets are as follows:

Nature: It is square shaped, short height, dark red color, man, warrior (Kshatriya) caste, vice planet, Satwa guna, fire element and Pitta nature.
Signification: It controls king, father, copper, trees with fruits, small trees, wheat, bones, head, eyes, brain and heart.

Nature: It is spherical, woman, Vaisya (business-class) caste, Sattva Guna, Vaat-Kapha nature.
Signification: It controls white color, mother, mind, art, white tree, silver, sweet, rice, chest, saliva, lungs and eye sight.

Nature: It has muscular body, square, cruel, aggressive, man, warrior (Kshatriya) class, Tamo-guni, Fire element, Pitta nature.
Signification: It shows red color, siblings, war, arms, thief, wound, daal, Pitta, blood, muscles, operation, ears and nose etc.

Nature: It is thin, impotent, business class (Vaishya), neutral planet, Rajoguni, earth element and consists of all three Vaat, Pitta and Kapha natures.
Signification: It indicates green color, grams, mother’s brother, mathematics, trade, speech, tongue, voice, sex related diseases, dumbness, laziness and skin diseases.

Nature: heavy fat body, man, Brahmin, pleasant, Sattva Guna, space element and Kapha nature.
Signification: It depicts yellow color, Vedas, religion, devotion, gold, wise, guru, fat, Kapha, swelling, home, education, sun, progeny, marriage and kidney etc.

Nature: It is beautiful, female, Brahmin, charming, Rajoguni, water element and Kapha nature.
Signification: It signifies white color, beautiful clothes, beauty, wife, love affair, sex, nuptial bliss, poetry, singing, eyes and women etc.

Nature: It has black color, strange eyes, thin and tall body, cruel, impotent, Shudra class, vice, Tamoguni, Vaat Kapha nature and air element.
Signification: It shows back color, father’s brother, jealousy, roguishness, thief, beasts, servants, age, moles, physical strength, practice of Yoga, luxury, renunciation, service and heart diseases etc.

Rahu & Ketu
Nature: They are Vice planets, Chandaal, Tamoguni, Vaat Pitta nature and impotent.
Signification: Dark smoke-like color, grandfather, grandmother, deception, accident, quarrel, theft, snake, abroad, skin diseases, legs, hunger and difficulty in progress etc.

Rahu’s nature is like Saturn and Ketu has Mars-like nature.

Suppose that we want to know about the looks of native. We are aware that ascendant or the first house determines one’s looks. Here, ascendant lord is Saturn because ‘11’ is written in 1st house indicating the sign Aquarius and it is ruled by Saturn. It shows that the Saturn is affecting native’s looks. Saturn is posited in seventh house along with Sun and Mercury in Leo sign. Sun is the lord of Leo too, thus Sun will also affect native’s looks. Saturn’s nature is black, strange eyes, thin and tall body, cruel, impotent, Shudra class, vice, Tamoguni, Vaat Kapha nature and air element. And Sun’s nature is square shape, short height, dark red color, man, warrior class, vice, Sattva Guna, fire element and Pitta nature. So, the native has influences from both these planets.


What is Rudraksha – About Rudraksha


The word Rudraksh as per Hindu mythology has its etymological beginnings in the two Sanskrit words “Rudra” and “Aksha” meaning Lord Shiva and Teardrops respectively. According to a Legend in “Shiv Purana” “, Lord Shiva once went into deep meditation for the well being of all living creatures. When he woke up, he opened his eyes and tear drops fell on the Earth. These tear drops took the form of seeds that later on became the Rudraksha tree. Religious Significance of Rudraksha

Lord Shiva is depicted wearing rosaries of Rudraksha beads on his head, arms and hands. From here stemmed the religious and spiritual significance of Rudraksha. The seed of Rudraksha is believed to contain the secrets of the entire evolution of the cosmos within it. Followers of Sanatana Dharma, the sages and yogis of the Himalayas, have for centuries worn Rudraksha in their quest for for a fearless life a path to spiritual Enlightenment and Liberation.

Medical Significance of Rudraksha

Rudraksha beads, botanically known as Elaeocarpus Ganitrus Roxb, are the seeds of the fruit from Rudraksha trees. Rudraksha trees are found mainly in Indonesia, Nepal, and India.

Boil the rudraksh in water for continous 6 hours, whether it is real rudraksha there wouldn’t be any effect on the rudraksh bead, else if it is synthetic or two rudrakshs are joined together artificially (in case of Gauri shanker bead), they may get seprate 3 Rudraksh should not be confused with the shape and size. Significances of Nava Durga

Navadurga which literally means nine Goddess Durgas, constitute, according to Hindu mythology, the manifestation of Durga in nine different forms. These nine forms of manifestation are Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghaṇṭa, Kuṣhmaṇḍa, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri; together worshipped during the Navratri (Nine Divine Nights) celebration in Autumn each year.

Durga, the Mother Goddess of the Hindus and a form of Devi and Shakti, is believed to have manifested in various forms, and Navadurga Maa are believed to be the most sacred aspects of Goddess Durga. According to a Hindu tradition, it is believed that there are three major forms in which Goddess Durga manifested herself, namely, Mahasaraswati, Mahalakshmi and Mahakali who are the active energies (Shakti) of Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra respectively (without these goddesses the gods will lose all their powers). These three forms of Durga further manifested in three more forms each, and thus emerged the nine forms of Durga, which are collectively called Navadurga or Nine Durgas. Navadurga are famously worshipped during the Autumn Navaratri or the Nine days, initiating the devotees into a period of festivities according to Hindu calendar.

Each one of the Navadurga is known by a particular name and the deity has a particular dhyana-mantra, a mantra for meditation, a free English version of which is mentioned below:


Shailaputri is the first form amongst the Navadurga or the nine forms of Hindu goddess Parvati or (Shakti), worshipped on first day during the Navratri celebrations – the nine divine nights. She is the first among Navadurgas and the first day of Navratri pooja is dedicated to Durga Shailaputri. Variously known as Sati, Bhavani, Parvati or Hemavati. Maa Shailaputri is the absolute form of Mother Nature. She is also known as Goddess Parvati the consort of Lord Shiva and mother of Ganesha and Kartikeya. In the Navratra festival the worshiping Mother Goddess has a half moon in her forehead & she is holding a trident in her right hand & lotus flower in her left hand. she rides on mount Nandi (bull).


Mythology: She is a daughter of Himalaya and first among nine Durgas. Shailaputri literally means the daughter (putri) of the mountains (shaila). Goddess Durga was born in the house of King of Mountains “Parvat Raj Himalaya”, so she is called “Shailaputri” means the daughter of mountain. Variously known as Sati Bhavani, Parvati or Hemavati, the daughter of Hemavana – the king of the Himalayas.

The embodiment of the power of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, she rides a bull and carries a trident and a lotus in her two hands. In previous birth she was the daughter of Daksha. Her name was Sati – Bhavani. i.e. the wife of Lord Shiva. Once Daksha had organized a big Yagna and did not invite Shiva. But Sati being obstinate, reached there. Thereupon Daksha insulted Shiva. Sati could not tolerate the insult of husband and burnt herself in the fire of Yagna. In other birth she became the daughter of Himalaya in the name of Parvati – Hemavati and got married with Shiva. As per Upanishad she had torn and the egotism of Indra, etc. Devtas. Being ashamed they bowed and prayed that, “In fact, thou are Shakti, we all – Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are capable by getting Shakti from you.”

In some scriptures like Shiva Purana & Devi-Bhagavata Purana the story of Mother Goddess is written as follow: Maa Bhagwati in her earlier birth was born as a daughter of Daksha Prajapati. Then her name was ‘Sati’ and she was married to Lord Shiva. But in a sacrificial ceremony organized by her father Prajapati Daksha, she got her body burnt in the yogic fire, because she could not bear the insult of her husband Lord Shiva by her father Prajapati Daksha in the sacrificial ceremony.

In her next birth she incarnated her as Goddess Parvati, the daughter of Parvat Raj Himalaya and among Nava Durgas she has been referred to as Shailaputri who was again known as Hemavati. In her Hemavati aspect she defeated all prominent gods. Like her previous birth in this life also Maa Shailaputri (Parvati) got married with Lord Shiva. The first and the most prominent among Nava Durgas, Shailaputri is of immense importance and her glories are endless. On the first day of Navratri worship it is she who is worshipped.

She is the Devi of the root chakra, who, upon awakening, begins Her journey upwards. Sitting on Nandi, and making her first journey from the Muladhara chakra. As from her father to her husband – the awakening Shakti, beginning Her search for Lord Shiva or making a move towards her Shiva. So that, In Navratri pooja the first day Yogi’s keep their mind concentrated on Muladhara. This is the starting point of their spiritual discipline. They started their Yogasadha from here. Shailaputri is the Muladhara Shakti to be realized within Self and sought for higher depths, in the yogic meditation.

Shailaputri means the daughter of the Himalaya. SHAILA is the derivative of the word SHILA. Shila means a rock, a stone. It is the rock of spiritual standing and the whole world gets strength from the Shailaputri aspect of Purna Prakriti DURGA.

From the Yogic point of view, the First Navratri is considered to be very auspicious day. This is the Yogic start for being in tune with the Divine Mother Durga. Those who want to have any kind of initiation in the Shakti Mantras, can have it on the First of Shukla Pratipada.

The aspiration of a devotee is to reach higher and further higher, for spiritual evolution, and for the attainment of Siddhi, which is perfection associated with Ananda (bliss). Verily, Shailaputri is the Muladhara Shakti to be realized within Self and sought for higher depths, in the YOGA-maditation. This is an experience in the soul-searching of Immutable within human existence. Shailaputri is the physical consciousness of the Divine Mother Durga. She is truly PARVATI, daughter of the King Hemavana, as described in the Shiva Purana. Shailaputri is the manifestation of this earth planet, which includes what is apparent on this earth, and within the globe. Shailaputri covers all the hills, vales, water resources, seas and oceans, including atmosphere.

Therefore, Shailaputri is the essence of the earthly existence. Her abode is in the Muladhara Chakra. The divine Energy is latent in every human being. It is to be realized. Its color is crimson. The Tattva (element) is Earth, with the Guna (quality) of coherence, and with the Bheda (distinct) characteristics of Ghraana (the smell).

Maa Brahmacharini is the second manifestation of Maa Durga who is worshippied on the second day of Navratri. Here word “Brahm” refers to “Tapa”. So Brahmcharini means Tapa Charini – The one who perform Tapa or penance. It is Said that the “Vedas”, “Tatva” & “Tapa” are synonyms of word “Brahm”. The form of Brahmacharini is tremendously effulgent and extremely majestic.


She holds a rosary in her right hand and Kamandalu in her left. SHE personifies love and loyalty. Mata Bhramacharni is store-house of knowledge and wisdom. Rudraksha is HER most adorned ornament. When she was incarnated as the daughter of Himalaya, then influenced by the instructions of Devrishi Narada, she practiced very hard penances in order to obtain Lord Shiva as her divine consort. Due to her unearthly penances she was termed as Brahmacharini. She spent one thousand years, only on fruits and beet-roots. One hundred years she spent only by eating leafy vegetables. For a sufficient perfiod of time observing complete fast she suffered tormenting of nature like torrential rains and scorching sun and biting cold, under the open sky. After such a difficult routine she lived only on dry Bilva pattaras (leaves) fallen on the ground for three thousand years. She kept her engrossed for twenty-four hours in worshiping Lord Shiva. After that she gave up eating even these dry leaves. For several thousand years she went on without any food and water. Because she gave up eating dry Bilva leaves so she was known to be Aparna as one of her epithets.

After the hardship of penance for several thousand years her body became extremely lean and thin. She was reduced to skeleton only. Her penance, sharpened as it was, caused great disturbance in all the three worlds. The whole universe was shaken. The Gods, the Rishis, the Siddhas, the Munis all eulogized her penance as an unprecedented virtuous action. Ultimately Lord Brahma through an oracle addressed her and said to her in a very pleasant manner-O Goddess, so far nobody has ever practiced such an austere penance. Only you could have done it. This wonderful deed is being praised in all the four quarters. Your desire would be fulfilled. You will decidedly get Lord Shiva as your divine consort. Now stop your penance and go home. Your father would be shortly coming to take you back.

After Gauri reincarnated as Parvati, she meditated on Lord Shiva to attain him as her husband. Lord Shiva came in a saint’s getup to test Parvati. He then made fun of Lord Shiva which the saint doesn’t know that he himself is Lord Shiva. Parvati gets angry and tries to curse him, but she didn’t, she chanted the “Panchakshari Mantra” of Lord Shiva. The saint changed his real form to Lord Shiva. Parvati was blessed and asked him to marry her, Lord Shiva became emotional when he married Sati, tears were rolling down his eyes, Parvati wiped them away with her hands. Brahmacharini is adorned with flowers and wearing a necklace made of beads, wearing a white saree, wearing “Rudraksh” beads as her necklace and has a fair complexion. In this way, she attained Lord Shiva to be her husband. She is filled with bliss and happiness. Brahmachari means bachelor in male and Brahmacharini means bachlorette in female.

Chandraghanta –

Maa Chandraghanta is the third Shakti of Maa Durga in her forehead, she has a half moon which is in the shape of a bell. Maa Chandraghanta is worshiped on the third day of Navrti Pooja. Those who worship Devi Chandraghanta get eternal strength and be blessed by Devi Maa to be happy through out one’s life.


Chandraghanta is considered to be a fierce incarnation of Parvati, she killed Dhumralochan, Chand-Mund, Raktabeej, Shumbh-Nishumbh and their demonic hoardes with the help of Goddess Kali, Kaushiki and other Goddesses. She is often known as Chandika, she is always ready for wars, battles and fights against all the demons, monsters, beasts, ghosts, evil spirits, ogres, demonesses, negative energies, elusive powers, mystical forces, and all demon entities. They also flee the battlefield like cowards when they see the violent, ghastly, intense, fierce, fearsome, ferocious, horrifying, terrible, frightful, horrble, terrifying, frightning, fiercest and most dangerous shadow on knowing upon her arrival. Usually, Parvati took this incarnation to kill Demon Dhumralochan and his armies who was sent by Shumbh and Nishumbh to kidnap her daughter, Kaushiki, they all didn’t know that they was all-powerful, she (Parvati) also took this incarnation to destroy Shumbh-Nishumbh and their remaining demon hoardes. Chandraghanta has ten hands holding weapons while the remaining right hand are in the gesture of boon-conferring. Her vehicle is the tiger, adorned with jewelry, wearing a grey saree, wears a crown, having three eyes representing past, present and future and having a fair complexion, she also wears a garland of flowers. Pertaining to have the main Durga look but she is a Mother Goddess filled with kindness. She is also a demon-fighting form of Goddess Durga. She wears a half moon on her forehead. After Kaushiki’s birth from Parvati, Parvati started to take various form to assist Kaushiki in the battle against Shumbh and Nishumbh’s demon messengers. Finally, Kaushiki killed Shumbh and Nishumbh.

Maa Chandraghanta is one Who establishes justice and wears crescent moon on Her head. Because of this bell shaped mark of moon which is present on the fore head of Maa Chandraghanta, Maa is known as Chandraghanta. The colour of her body is golden, she rides on lion who descrides “dharma”, possesses ten hands and three eyes, eight of Her hands display weapons while the remaining two are respectively in the mudras of gestures of boon giving and stopping harm. Devi Maa is posed as to be ready for war. “Chandra Ghanta”  meaning supreme bliss and knowledge, showering peace and serenity, like cool breeze in a moonlit night. By her blessings all the hindrances coming in way of a person are removed. Her pleasant looks clears all sorrows and sadness of her devotees. Her roaring voice alerts and makes the Demons to tremble.

In Durga Pooja the third day of Navratri is very important in Navaratri. This day the mind of the sadhak enters Manipura Cakra. At this stage by the grace of Maa Chandraghanta he becomes capable of seeing unearthly and divine things. He smells the divine fragrance and many types of divine sound become audible to him. On this day and in this stage of discipline the sadhak is required to be most careful.

By the grace of Mother Chandraghanta all sins of the sadhak (striver) are burnt up and obstacles removed. Her worship is instantly fruitful. She is always in a gesture as if ready to proceed for the battlefield and thus she removes the difficulties of devotees very promptly. Her vehicle is lion and so her worshiper becomes valorous and fearless like a lion. The sound of her bell always protects her devotees from evil spirits. As soon as the sadhak invokes her, her bell immediately becomes active and starts ringing to protect the devotee under her shelter.

Kushmanda –


Kushmanda is the fourth form of Goddess Durga. Devi Maa is worshiped on fourth day during Durga Pooja in Navratri.  Her name goes through like this: Ku – A little, Ushma – Warmth and Anda – The cosmic Egg, in texts, the universe was no more than a void full of darkness until she appears and from the light from her body emerged an uncountable numer of light that spread all around. She is also the provider of light like Lord Surya, the Sun God. Kushmanda used her powers to create the world, after creating the world, she created all Gods (Demi Gods), saints (sages), Kinnars, (Kinnaries) Yakshs, (Yakshinis) fairies, humans, Goddesses and including the Trinity and many more. Kali, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma were created from her grace. Goddess Kushmanda picked Brahma to be with Saraswati for creation, Vishnu with Lakshmi for maintaining and Shiva with Kali for slaughtering the world. Kushmanda is also the consort of Shiva. Kali is the wife of Shiva also, Kushmanda is Adi Shakti herself and reappeared herself as Goddess Chandika by the combination by these three Goddesses. Kushmanda has eight hands holding weapons while the other two pitchers are filled with blood, she also rides the tiger as her vehicle. She wears jewelry, a crown, wears a pink saree and has a fair complexion. She is somewhat like Goddess Bhuvaneshwari, except with her, she has four hands and rules the world.

Goddess Durga is very happy in this incarnation and it is believed that when there is no existence of any creation or universe & there was the eternal darkness, which ended when Maa Kushmanda smiled. So that Maa Kushmanda is known as the creator the whole universe. Maa Kushmanda is also named as “Adi Shakti”. The core of Suraymandala (Sun) is the residence of Devi Maa. She is the only one who has the power & strength to live in the core of Suryaloka (Sun). Her body shines like the glowing Sun. All directions get light from Her Divine smile including the Sun God  itself.  Maa Kushmanda also known as “Ashtabhuja” as she is often depicted as having eight arms. In her seven hands she holds Kamandalu, Bow, Arrow, Lotus, a Jar of Nectar, Discus, and Mace. In her eighth hand she holds a rosary capable of giving eight Siddhis and nine Niddhis. She rides a lion who represents “Dharma”. On worshiping Her ailments and sorrows are eliminated and life span, name, strength and health improved.

Skand Mata –


Skand Mata is the fifth form of Goddess Durga. Her name goes through like this: Skand – Kartikeya and Mata – Mother. In one myth, Shiva and Parvati’s energy combines into their own forms of nature when meditating. Indra came to know all this and assigns Lord Agni (Fire) to kidnap the ball of energy and keep it for safety from Demon Tarakasur. Agni snuck in the cave and took the energy by deceit and lies in his hands, after meditation, Parvati realizes that Lord Agni took the divine energy and chased after him. Lord Agni vanished with the divine energy and ran to Goddess Ganga. Meanwhile, Parvati came out of the cave and asked the Gods that why Lord Agni stole the divine energy, the Gods answered her that they have to keep it safe from Demon Tarakasur. Parvati gets angry and attains the form of Goddess Shakti with eight hands holding weapons, wearing a red saree, adorned with jewelry, wearing a crown and has fair complexion cursed the Gods that their wives will never be able to enjoy the happiness with their children and with that, curses Lord Agni that he will be an all-burner, unable to diffrentiate the differences between right and wrong and his food will have impurities, he will always be surrounded by black smoke and also curses that in anyone touches him in one of the three worlds, they will get reduced to ashes. Meanwhile, Shiva came out of the cave placated her by telling her to calm down. Skand Mata has four hands, in the first two in which they were raised the two pink lotuses, the right one is slightly raised upwards, the left upper hand is slightly lower, the lower two are in the gestures of fear-dispellings and boon-conferrings. She holds the infant Skand in her lap while the left lower hand is the gesture of boon-conferrings, she has three eyes representing past, present and future and having a fair complexion. She wears a yellow or orange saree, rides the lion as her vehicle. Her son Skand is chosen by Gods as their commander in chief in the war against the demons and Demon Tarakasur. She is regularily known as “The Goddess of Fire”.

Thus being the mother of Skanda she is Skandamata. Worshipping Skandamata has on the fifth day of Navaratra has very iportacefor Yogis & Sadhaks . This day devotee’s mind reaches Visuddha Cakra and stays therein. In her image the Lord Skanda in his infant form is always found. She holds him in her lap.

Using a lion as a vehicle, Mother Goddess has four arms & three eyes. She holds Lord Skanda in her right upper arm and a lotus flower in her right lower hand, which is slightly raised upward. The left upper arm is in a pose to grant boon and in left lower hand, which is raised, she again holds lotus. She is Golden color. She is seated on lotus flower so she is called Padmasana.

The scriptures are very eloquent in glorifying the fifth day of Navaratra period. As the mind of the aspirant, on this day, is in the Visuddha Cakra. So all his actions internal as well as external completely stop and the mind bereft of all thought-waves, is calm like a wave less ocean. It would be advancing towards the state of pure consciousness. It is completely submerged in the meditation of Mother Padmasana, quite devoid of worldly thoughts or coats of Maya. It is time when the aspirant should be most careful and cautious on the path of his Sadhana.

Katyayani –


Katyayani is the sixth form of Goddess Durga. According to a legend, Sage Katyayan and his son Katya prayed to Goddess Durga for a boon, when she appeared, Katyayan asked to reincarnate as his daughter in the form of a Goddess. Meanwhile, Sage Katyayan named her daughter as Katyayani to protect the world from terror and evil. When she grew, Brahma gives Mahishasur a boon that he will be killed by a lady and no one else but a lady (Parvati). To fulfill the boon, she has to kill Demon Mahishasur, to kill him, all Gods offered their powers and weapons by having ten or eighteen hands for her. Another tale says that Lakshmi and Saraswati goes into Parvati’s body to kill Mahishasur. Lakshmi’s “Maha Lakshmi” form has eighteen hands bearing weapons in Devi Mahatmyam (Durga Saptashati) she rides a lion and gets ready to kill Mahishasur’s commanders. This form is considered to be Adi Shakti’s incarnation as Mahishasur Mardini (Killer of Mahishasur). Mahishasur Mardini is another name for Goddess Durga/Katyayani. “Jai Jag Janani Maa Durga” serial says that Goddess Durga takes the getup as an unmarried woman then reveals herself to the demons and kills them along with Mahishasur and Kaalkey’s demons had kidnapped Katyayan and Narayani’s child by throwing it up in the air into the ceiling and the baby transformed into an uncountable number of bright suns. The voice cursed Kaalkeyi that he will be killed by a Goddess in the form of a Goddess. Kaalkeyi was terrified and ran here, there and everywhere in the hell. Katyayani has four hands, the raised right hand holds a sword, the upper left holds a trident, the left lower holds a lotus and the lower right hand is in the gesture of fear-dispellings, she wears a green saree, wears a flower garland, adorned with jewelry, having a fair complexion and rides the lion as her vehicle. In Shaktism, she is associated traditionally with the colour red and also associated with the fierce forms of Bhadrakali and Chandika.

She is called Katyayani because she was born as the daughter of Sage Katya of Katya clan. Sage Katyayan performed very hard penance of Maa Bhagvati. It was his wish that Maa Durga born as his daughter. The Goddess acceded to his request. Meanwhile, army of the powerful demon Mahishasura, who could only be killed by a warrior Goddess, had reached heaven to overthrow the Gods from their abode. The trinity of Gods – Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, got infuriated and they created the Goddess Durga, who was a culmination of the powers of all deities. Sage Katyayana had the first privilege to worship her, so she was also named Katyayani.

Another myth goes by that she was born to Katyayana as his daughter on the 14th dark of the month Asvina. Katyayana worshiped her for three days, 7th, 8th and 9th of the bright fortnight in the same month and killed Mahishasur on Vijayadasami. Her worship done with devotion and faith leads to four objects – Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha.

This is the daughter form of Durga. Here is she a loving daughter. She is epitome of love but won’t hesitate to rise up in anger to defend righteousness and Dharma. It is believed that Maa Katyayani persistently battles against the evil and deceitful entities.

She has three eyes and four arms. One left hand holds a weapon and the other a lotus. The other two hands respectively display defending and granting gestures. Her skin appears golden in color. Her mount is a lion.

To get God Krishna as a husband gopis worship Maa Katyayani in Vraj. So she is established as the Queen of Vraj. There is a very famous temple in Delhi (Chhattarpur) of Maa. This shrine is dedicated to Goddess Katyayani, whose “darshan” can be availed only on “Ashtami” falling in every month. Otherwise, the “darshan” of Goddess Katyayani can be made throughout the days of ‘Navratri’. The golden image of Katyayani attracts the attention of devotees with its huge size and sheer divinity.

Kaal Ratri


Kaal Ratri is the seventh form of Goddess Durga. She is the most agressive form of Adi Shakti, also known as destructive form of Shakti/Durga. Kaal Ratri is a War Goddess like Chandraghanta and Durga, she is often known as Kali, means black. When Parvati incarnated as Jagadamba to kill Raktabeej, she saw the great demon Raktabeej who was arrogant about his power, she got angry and incarnated as Kaal Ratri to kill Raktabeej and his clones, she killed him by drinking his blood and beheading without letting a clone of Raktabeej remaining and his blood without letting it fall on the ground and letting another clone of Raktabeej being created. Often, it is said that Kaushiki kills Raktabeej with her sword and Kali drinks up his blood. Parvati again manifested as Kaal Ratri to kill Demon Hund and to protect Ashok Sundari. She is also identified with Bhairavi in Durga Saptashati. In other texts, Kaal Ratri is always ready for wars, battles and fights against all the demons, monsters, beasts, ghosts, evil spirits, demonesses, negative energies, elusive powers, mystical forces, and all demon entities. They also flee the battlefield like cowards when they see the violent, ghastly, intense, fierce, fearsome, ferocious, horrifying, terrible, frightful, horrble, terrifying, frightning, fiercest and most dangerous shadow on knowing upon her arrival. Usually, Parvati took this incarnation to kill Chand and Mund and is called Chamunda (Chamundi). Kaal Ratri has four hands, the raised right hand is holding a trident, the upper left hand holds a sword, the right lower hand is holding a scimitar and the left lower hand holds a weapon made out of thorns. Kaal Ratri often wears a black saree and also wears a garland of severed human skulls which represents the fifty letters of the Sanskrit alphabet or heads, a girdle made out of tiger skin and wearing severed human hands and having a third eye on her forehead.

Kalaratri means the One who is “the Death of Kaal”. Here Kaal is dedicated as time & death. Kalaratri is the one who destroys ignorance and removes darkness. This form primarily depicts that life also has dark side – the violent Mother Nature and creates havoc and removes all dirt. She is also known as Shubhankari.In this form Goddess Kalratri killed Raktabeej. Raktabeej was a demon who could multiply from every drop of his blood which fell on the ground. The Goddess Kaalratri killed him by licking the blood before it could reach the ground and hence conquered him. She endows her devotees with calm and courage.

The complexion of Maa Kalaratri is like dark night with bountiful hair and has four hands. The left two hands holds a cleaver and a torch, and the right two are in the mudras of “giving” and “protecting”. She has necklace is so shining like thunder. She has three eyes which emanate rays like lightning. Flames appear through her nostrils when she inhales or exhales air. Her mount is donkey. Blue,Red, White color should be used to wear on this day.

Appearance of Maa Kalratri is very dangerous. But she always gives good fruits. So devoters should not get afraid of her. Her worship on 7th day of Navratri has very much importavnce to yogies & sadhak. Yogis & sadhaks penance on Shahtra Chakra on this day. For the worshipers on this day door opens of every siddhi in universe.

Maha Gauri –


Maha Gauri is the eighth form of Goddess Durga. Her name goes like this: Maha – Great and Gauri – White. In one text, due to Lord Shiva’s miracle, Parvati turned black like Goddess Kali. Lord Shiva knows that this was a dirty trick he played on. Parvati got very upset and started to cry. Meanwhile, Adi Shakti appears and tries to cheer Parvati up. She tells her to go to Himalaya and do severe penance for Lord Brahma. So Parvati did what Adi Shakti said. She chanted his name for a long time and never stopped. Finally, Lord Brahma appears there and he gives Parvati her fair complexion back and the dark complexion took shape of a Goddess named Kaushiki, therefore she (Parvati) was justified with the name “Maha Gauri”. Maha Gauri has four hands holding trident, a small rattle drum and a lotus, her right lower hand is in the gesture of fear-dispellings. She wears a crown and wears a pink saree.

Maa Durga is worshiped as Maa Mahagauri on eighth Navratri. Mahagauri is the eight form of Goddess Shakti. Her color is white. Whiteners is shown by shell, moon etc. Mahagauri means one clean and bright like a ray of lightning.



Siddhidatri is the ninth and last form of Goddess Durga. Her name means “Giver of all supernatural powers”. According to one myth. Siddhidatri gave Brahma, Vishnu and Lord Shiva an identity each, creator, caretaker and destroyer. She tells Lord Shiva to meditate on her to be blessed with all eight supernatural powers: Anima (Ability to change the physical size to the smallest), Mahima (Changing the size to the largest), Garima (Becoming infinitely heavy), Laghima (Becoming weightless), Prapti (Having access to all places), Prakambya (Generating any desire), Ishitva (Having sovereign lordship) and Vashitva (Controller of all things). Meanwhile when Lord Shiva was meditating on Siddhidatri for all the eight supernatural powers, Siddhidatri appears and gives him the form of a half man-woman and Lord Shiva will be known as “Ardhnarishwar” (The Lord who is half-Shiva and half-Shakti). Lord Shiva was very happy. Siddhidatri has four hands holding discus, conch shell, trident and mace, wears a red saree, adorned with jewelry, wears a crown, sitting on a fully-bloomed pink lotus as her vehicle.

The Goddess Siddhidatri is capable of giving all sorts of occult powers and is also the possessor of 26 different wishes to grant her worshipers. All these achievements [Siddhi], which according to the Markandaye Purana:- Anima, Mahima, Garima, Laghima, Prapti, Prakaamya, Ishitva and Vashitva are 8 siddhis. As per the Brahmavaivart Purana there are 18 types of achievements which are Anima, Mahima, Garima, Ladhima, Prapti, Prakaamya, Ishitva,Vashitva, Sarvakaamaal, Saadhita, Sarvagynatva, DurShravana, Parkaayapraveshan, VakaSiddhi, Kalpavrushatva, Shrishti, Samharkaransaamarthya, Amaratva, Sarvanyayakatva, Bhavana and Siddhi.

Legend has it that the Supreme God Shiva got all these ‘siddhis’ by worshiping Maha Shakti. With her gratitude the half body of Shiva became that of the Goddess Shakti and therefore he also came to be called as ‘Ardhanarishvar’. Dev, Danav, Gandharva, Kinnar, Yaksh, Manav, all do worship Maa Siddhidaatri and attain achievements. Maa Durga removes ignorance and she provides the knowledge to realize That or Brahman. That is why She is surrounded by Siddhas, Gandharvas, Yakshas, Demons and Gods who are worshiping her. The Siddhi that she provides is the realization that everything is Supreme Being or Brahman. If a “sadhaka” worships in the prescribed manner with his full faith he acquires all “Siddhis” and nothing remains unattainable from him in the universe.
